Red Ants Rumble # 2 - 28th/29th Jan 2012

Congratulations and a massive thanks you to everyone who raced and finished the Red Ants Rumble Adventure Race this weekend! It seemed from all accounts that most teams thought the race was a tough one, but with a 60% finishing rate the racers showed true vasbyt out there! Well done everyone!

The trials and tribulations of the teams will surely be documented in many race reports to follow during the week. The overall race was dominated by a well-oiled and professional male pair of Tony Abbott and Steven Erasmus of Team Here Be Dragons. In the main mixed team category, Team PS Hawkstone Xhale crossed the line 58 minutes ahead of Geronimo, but in a twist of fate were handed a 1 hour penalty for 2 items of missing mandatory equipment (30 minutes per item), thus coming in 2nd by a mere 2 minutes.

Mixed Teams:

• 1st - Geronimo: 17 hrs 44 mins
• 2nd - PS Hawkstone Xhale: 17 hrs 46 mins (time adjusted 1 hour penalty for missing mandatory kit)
• 3rd - Lickety Split: 20 hrs 58 mins
• 4th - Ubuntu (Stanford Lake College school team): 24 hrs 22 mins (time adjusted 2 hour penalty)

• 1st - Here be dragons: 16 hrs 10 mins
• 2nd - Alligators: 16 hrs 44 mins
• 3rd - Charnas: 17 hrs 27 mins
• 4th - Sensless Linebreak: 18 hrs 07 mins

• 1st - Olympus: 17 hrs 16 mins
• 2nd - Last minute: 18 hrs 13 mins
• 3rd - Stofstreep: 24 hrs 27 mins
• 4th - healthythings.co.za: 32 hrs 20 mins

Argentina, here come the Red Ants!

The established South African adventure racing team, Red Ants, will compete in their first overseas adventure race in February 2011. The team, formed eight years ago, has excelled in local events, with numerous podium finishes at all major races. Their first international excursion will see the team racing at the Tierra Viva AR, a six-day non-stop expedition race in southern Argentina. The team’s founders, Brian Gardner (26) and Nicky Booyens (31), are joined by experienced racers, Alex Wagner (38) and Tim Deane (35).



Tierra Viva AR is an unsupported expedition-style adventure race staged in the Andean mountains of Argentina in late-February 2011. The race starts in the mountain village of Villa La Angostura in the Neuquen Province of Argentine Patagonia. Mixed-gender four-person teams will race for six days through this breathtaking area of high-altitude forests, lakes and mountains, covering the 450-kilometre race distance by foot, mountain bike and kayak.



The team expects the navigation in the Andean mountains to be challenging, but with three proficient navigators they are confident of minimising errors for a successful race. “And Alex is fluent in Spanish,” says Gardner. “The team is looking forward to a good result while enjoying the striking scenery of Patagonia and experiencing the Argentinean culture.”

Southern Skies 24hr MTB Race - 1st/2nd May 2010

The Red Ants, Brian, Gerrard and Nicky raced the Southern Skies 24 HR MTB race in a team with a few friends - Alex, Jane and Angela.
It ended up being a nail biting finish, but the Red Ants manage to claim 1st place by just 24 seconds from 2nd place after 24hrs of racing - Well Done Team!!

Nicky finishes her 3rd Cape Epic - 29th March 2010

Nicky completed the 2010 Absa Cape Epic riding with fellow adventure racer Jeannette Walder. They finised 9th Ladies Team and 254 Overall.

Red Ants win Mixed Category at Diamond Dash - 20th Feb 2010

The Red Ants competed in the Cullinan Dimond Dash 50km this past weekend finishing 1st Mixed Team and second overall. Well done to Team Gijima for hosting such a fantastic event.

Central Gauteng Provincial Cycling Colours - 2008

Congradulations to Gerrard and Nicky Booyens on recieving their Central Gauteng Provincial Colours for Cross Country Mountain Biking.

Gauteng Summer Trail Series - October/November 2008

Garry, Nicky and Gerrard participated in the Gauteng Summer Trail Series run over 5 weeks. Gerrard raced two of the short course events finishing in 2nd and 1st place respectively. Garry and Nicky raced 3 long course events and Garry finished 5th overall Open Man in the series and Nicky finished 2nd Open Female overall in the series.

UCI World Masters MTB Championships, France - 30th August 2008

Nicky represented South Africa at the UCI World Masters XC MTB Championships in France at the end of August, she had a great race finishing 6th in her age group.
